Why it works for children & what’s in it

Times are estimates for the base recipe. Larger quantities may take longer.

Step by step

Here’s how.

Keep it simple today.

Mild jarred roasted peppers skip the oven stage. The spread then takes about 10–15 minutes; choose peeled peppers without chilli.

What you can prepare ahead

Blend the day before and refrigerate covered as soon as cooled. Eat within 48 hours. Spread on bread just before serving so it does not go soggy.

If there is room for it today

Helping is lovely. Watching is fine too.

Your child can rinse the beans and later spread the dip onto bread. An adult handles the oven, hot peppers and blender.

It does not have to be a family cooking project. It is fine to do it yourself today.

Good things for your family table

Why it works for children.

Pepper skins are removed and beans are blended smooth, leaving no firm bean pieces. Familiar bread gives children a way to explore the new flavour in small amounts.

About this nutrient

These notes refer to the ingredients in the base recipe. The amount on the plate depends on preparation, portion size and swaps. Variety across the week makes the difference.

Make it yours.

Jarred roasted, peeled peppers save oven time. Choose a mild variety without chilli, drain well and rinse if the brine is salty. Check ingredients and possible sulphites.

Feeling a little unsure?

Keep one strip of bread plain and put a little spread on a second. Parsley can be left out. There is no need to cover the whole slice the first time.

Keeping leftovers

Cool the spread promptly, cover and refrigerate at 5 °C or below within 2 hours. Eat within 48 hours. Always use a clean spoon. Spread bread fresh, and do not return leftovers from used children’s bowls to the container.

For younger eaters

Designed for family meals from age 3, not as a weaning recipe. Always adapt shape and texture to your child’s abilities. Cook hard pieces until soft or grate finely; cut up small round foods. Stay with your child while they eat. For known allergies, check ingredients and substitutions individually.
